Mountain
Bike Tours (NSW): Get Active!
With
the introduction of more cycle paths both in towns and in
the country, and the advances in technology making bikes more
comfortable and easier to ride, cycling has become an increasingly
popular activity.
Benefits
As well as being
a cheap and pollution-free means of transport, cycling is
an excellent activity for improving the heart and lungs, relieving
stress, and increasing muscular strength and endurance. Cycling
to and from work or the shops integrates exercise into everyday
activities - whilst cycling for fun is a great way to explore
the Australian Coast, Rainforest and Bush.
Is it suitable
for me?
If you rode a bike
as a child it will come back to you quite quickly. Starting
in traffic-free areas such as special protected forests with
MTB Tours NSW will help you to gain confidence.
As with most activities cycling needs to be built up gradually.
If your fitness levels are poor when you start it is easier
to start in flat areas. We can offer you a range of levels!
Where can you
do it?
With Mountain Bike
Tours (NSW) we offer Day tours and accommodate everyone from
the, beginner or occasional cyclist to serious competition
riders.
Cycling Clubs are generally either for road cycling or for
off-road (including mountain biking) and may specialise in
fun days out in the country or more serious competition and
Extreme Riding - so look about to find one that suits your
needs.
Alternately, you can simply set off and cycle alone or with
a group of friends.
Off-road cycling requires more upper body strength and greater
balance than road cycling, however, the rewards are a traffic-free
environment and access to places unavailable by car.
A good way to start off-road riding is to Give MTB Tours NSW
a Freecall 1800 122 504 and come along on a day ride with
us. That way it's possible to ride within your physical capabilities
without ever being too far away from our help or support vehicle.
Many of our forest and coastal cycle routes and tracks are
picked and graded to indicate difficulty. When you start cycling
off-road, do not plan to cover the same distance as you would
on road - you will be travelling much slower for the same
amount of effort.
Top tips for
cycling safety:
| - |
Most serious injuries
from cycling accidents involve injury to the head. Always
wear a well-fitting cycle helmet, off road as well as
on road. It's the Law! |
| - |
To ride safely the bike must
be maintained as well as the rider. You should learn to
carry out simple repairs and always carry a basic toolkit
and a spare inner tube. |
| - |
Wear bright colours and use
lights in poor visibility. |
| - |
Follow the Trail codes. |
